A devastating fire broke out at a Border Security Force (BSF) camp in Hingalganj, Basirhat, on Thursday morning, resulting in the death of a jawan who was burnt alive. The deceased has been identified as Ram Singh, a personnel of the BSF’s 77th Battalion.
According to initial information, the fire originated inside a room located near the camp’s fuel storage area, where boat refuelling activities were reportedly underway. The blaze spread rapidly, trapping the jawan inside before he could escape. Preliminary suspicion points towards a short circuit as the possible cause, though the exact reason is yet to be confirmed.
Fire services personnel rushed to the spot and managed to bring the flames under control after nearly an hour-long operation. However, by the time the fire was extinguished, Ram Singh had already succumbed to the intense blaze. The incident has triggered panic in the surrounding area, with questions being raised over safety arrangements inside the camp.
Both BSF authorities and fire department officials have launched a detailed investigation into the incident. Security lapses and fuel storage safety protocols are also under scrutiny as authorities attempt to determine how the fire escalated so quickly in a high-security zone.
