Fire breaks out at Mahakumbh, several tents burnt down

A large fire broke out at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Sunday, January 19, in Sector 19 of the Tent City. The fire was triggered by the explosion of two LPG cooking cylinders around 4:30 PM, causing a massive blaze that quickly engulfed about 50 tents. The fire spread rapidly, prompting an immediate response from local firefighting teams.

Firefighters deployed 15 fire tenders to the scene, working for over an hour to control the blaze. Local authorities, including District Magistrate Ravindra Kumar and Akhara Police Station In-charge Bhaskar Mishra, confirmed that the fire caused significant damage to the tents, but no casualties were reported. The blaze was eventually contained, but the extent of the damage to property remains under investigation.

The fire occurred near the Gita Press camp, with multiple cylinder explosions contributing to the rapid spread of flames across the area. The camp, along with other nearby tents, was severely affected by the fire. Authorities immediately launched relief and rescue operations, and the situation was brought under control with the help of fire safety teams.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was alerted to the incident and ensured that senior officers were sent to the site to oversee the response. CM Adityanath had earlier conducted an aerial survey of the Mela area on the same day, and the administration is focusing on ensuring that such incidents are prevented in the future.

The ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, which started on January 13, is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world and will run until February 26. As of January 18, more than 77.2 million pilgrims have attended the Mela, with over 46.95 lakh devotees taking the holy dip on Sunday alone. The large number of attendees has made safety and crowd management a top priority for local authorities.

In preparation for the Mela, extensive fire safety measures were put in place, including over 350 fire brigades, 50 fire posts, and 20 fire stations throughout the Mela grounds. Advanced firefighting equipment, such as articulated water towers (LWT), has been deployed to reach high-rise tents and structures in the event of a fire. The Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) set up at the Mela helps manage crowd control, monitor safety, and coordinate emergency responses.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have assured that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of the devotees and prevent further incidents. Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the full extent of the damage. The fire did not disrupt the religious activities of the Mela, with millions of pilgrims continuing to visit the Triveni Sangam for the holy dips.
