Fire breaks out at Rajasthan refinery a day before inauguration by PM Modi

A massive fire broke out at the Pachpadra refinery in Balotra just 24 hours before its scheduled inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sending thick black clouds of smoke into the sky and triggering concern over safety at the high-profile project. The incident occurred on Monday, with visuals showing dense plumes rising from the refinery complex.

According to initial information, the fire originated in the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) section of the refinery. Officials confirmed that there were no immediate reports of casualties, though emergency response teams rushed to the site to control the blaze. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and further details are awaited as authorities assess the situation.

The refinery is a major project located in Pachpadra and is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and the Government of Rajasthan. It is India’s first greenfield integrated refinery-cum-petrochemical complex and is expected to play a key role in boosting the country’s energy security by reducing dependence on fuel imports and increasing domestic production capacity.

The project has a long development history. Its foundation stone was laid on September 22, 2013, during the tenure of the then state government, with an initial estimated cost of ₹37,230 crore. Later, the project was relaunched on January 16, 2018, with a revised cost of ₹43,129 crore, reflecting its expanded scope and scale.

Beyond fuel production, the refinery is expected to generate a wide range of petrochemical products, including polypropylene, polyethylene, benzene, toluene, and butadiene. These materials are set to support multiple industries such as plastic manufacturing, automobile components, packaging, and chemicals, contributing to the development of a strong industrial ecosystem and positioning Rajasthan as a key hub for value-added manufacturing.
