A fire broke out in a luxury apartment on the fifth floor of a multi-story building in Ward No. 31 of Maheshtala Municipality on Sunday afternoon. The blaze reportedly originated in the kitchen and rapidly engulfed the entire flat, causing widespread panic among the residents of the housing complex. According to local sources, an elderly couple was present inside the house at the time of the incident, but they managed to escape without any physical injuries.
The fire started when the wife, who was cooking, momentarily left the kitchen to attend to her husband in another room. In her absence, the hot oil in the cooking pan caught fire, which quickly spread to the cabinets and other flammable materials in the room. Within minutes, the intense flames gutted most of the furniture and household items, leaving the apartment severely damaged.
Upon noticing the smoke and flames, the couple immediately rushed downstairs and alerted their neighbors. While the residents of the building initially attempted to douse the fire with water buckets, the fire department was soon notified. One fire engine arrived at the scene shortly after and managed to bring the situation under control, preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent flats.
