Fire burns down data centre of Jharkhand police HQ

A major fire broke out at the data center of the Jharkhand Police Headquarters in Dhurwa, Ranchi, on Tuesday morning, causing a significant disruption and raising alarm within the administrative circles. The fire, which reportedly started in the development room on an upper floor, quickly spread to the main data center, leaving a trail of destruction. While a short circuit is suspected to be the cause, an official confirmation is still awaited.

Eyewitnesses reported that as soon as the fire started, the entire premises were engulfed in smoke, creating a scene of chaos and panic. Multiple fire tenders were rushed to the spot, and it took hours for the fire department to bring the blaze under control. The rapid spread of the fire highlights potential flaws in the building's safety and fire-fighting systems.

The damage from the fire is extensive, with approximately 40 computers, 10 air conditioners, and other expensive electronic equipment in the data center being completely destroyed. Officials have estimated the financial loss to be in the crores. However, the biggest concern is the potential loss of critical police data, servers, and technical systems housed in the center.

While officials have claimed that the data backup is safe, the actual status can only be confirmed after a thorough inspection. If the backup is compromised, it would pose a significant challenge for the police administration, as it contains vital records and operational information. The incident has brought to light the vulnerability of crucial government infrastructure.

Senior officials from the police headquarters, the IT department, and technical experts have arrived at the site to assess the damage and begin the restoration process. In response to the seriousness of the incident, the state government has ordered a high-level inquiry to investigate the cause of the fire and review the safety standards of such sensitive installations to prevent similar incidents in the future.
