Bengal Govt elevates IPS Ajay Mukund Ranade to DGP (Law and Order)
A devastating fire broke out in a slum area popularly known as 'Bangladeshi Colony' near Eco Park in New Town on Wednesday. The blaze spread rapidly through the densely packed shanties of the Ghuni settlement, sending thick plumes of black smoke into the sky. Local residents reported hearing frequent sounds of cylinder explosions, which further intensified the fire and hampered initial rescue efforts.
The rapid spread of the fire has created a state of panic among nearby residents, who fear the flames might reach adjacent residential complexes. Eye-witnesses stated that the fire originated from one of the shanties and quickly engulfed the entire row due to the presence of inflammable materials. The sound of exploding cooking gas cylinders added to the chaos as people scrambled to save their belongings.
Four fire engines reached the spot shortly after the alarm was raised, but officials have struggled to bring the blaze under complete control due to the intensity of the heat and the narrow lanes of the settlement. Firefighting operations are currently underway in full swing. The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, though authorities are looking into potential short circuits or kitchen mishaps.
