No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A fire broke out in an empty rake stationed at Platform No. 2 of Katwa railway station under Eastern Railway early Sunday morning, triggering brief panic but causing no injuries. The blaze was brought under control within minutes, and railway authorities confirmed that train services were not disrupted.
According to initial information, smoke was first noticed around 4:50 a.m. by an unidentified passenger, who alerted railway staff. Officials from the Government Railway Police at Katwa rushed to the platform and immediately informed the fire department to prevent the situation from escalating.
Two fire engines reached the station around 5:00 a.m. and began firefighting operations. Their swift response ensured that the flames were quickly contained, averting what could have turned into a major mishap at the busy railway station during early morning hours.
Providing official details, Indrajit Basu, SRP of Howrah GRP, said the incident has been taken seriously and necessary action is being initiated. An investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the fire, while railway authorities reiterated that all train operations continue as usual.
