Firhad addresses key issues of overhead wires, dengue, hoardings and rooftop restaurants

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim addressed several critical issues facing the city, providing updates on infrastructure, public health, and municipal compliance. Key among these are the complex projects of moving hanging utility wires underground and controlling the annual outbreak of dengue fever.

He acknowledged the infrastructural limitations that prevent a simultaneous city-wide overhaul of the overhead wires but detailed plans to prioritize major arteries. Furthermore, the Mayor signaled a tightening of rules surrounding the ubiquitous Puja hoardings, aiming to curb misuse by advertising agencies while also confirming that the city is on high alert for dengue, stressing the need for collective public awareness.

Regarding the tangle of overhead cables, a common sight and a serious hazard in Kolkata, the Mayor stated, "We have implemented a system to take some wires underground in certain streets. We have purchased the necessary pipes, and the civil work is underway." He was candid about the financial and logistical constraints, adding, "I do not have the capacity to do all of Kolkata at once. However, we are focusing on the main roads."

The issue of Puja hoardings, which often clutter the city during the festive season, was also addressed. The Mayor noted that "advertising agencies are taking advantage" of the relaxed environment. While acknowledging that the Chief Minister provided opportunities to local clubs, he insisted that "the rules must be changed next."

On the perennial issue of unauthorised rooftop construction and restaurants, the Mayor gave a firm deadline. "Thirty people have been issued notices for a period of three months." He explained that the Fire Department and the Municipality will jointly inspect these properties to ensure compliance with safety norms. Key checks include adequate clear space and whether a hydraulic ladder can be deployed. Only those who "comply with these requirements" will be considered for regularisation, signalling a tough stance on fire safety.

Finally, on the critical public health front, the Mayor shared the current dengue statistics: "As of now, there are 1017 dengue cases this year." This represents an increase of 85 cases compared to the previous year. He explained the cause: "When there is sporadic rain, mosquito larvae breed more easily on rooftops and other spots."

He urged citizens to check their own properties, emphasizing, "Many people have become aware, but everyone needs to be conscious; only then can dengue be eradicated. Pay a little attention to your own terrace and surroundings." Regarding the reported death of a four-year-old, he cautiously stated, "I cannot comment on the death of the four-year-old child because the Health Department has not yet provided any information."
