Firhad Hakim and Sovandeb Chattopadhyay emerge as frontrunners for TMC LoP post

The Trinamool Congress has intensified internal deliberations over selecting its new Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly after suffering a major defeat in the Assembly elections. According to party sources, the leadership is expected to finalise the decision before Monday, with senior leaders Firhad Hakim and Sovandeb Chattopadhyay emerging as the leading contenders for the post. The party won 80 seats in the Assembly elections, while the Bharatiya Janata Party secured 207 seats and formed the government.

The selection process has gained significance as the Trinamool Congress prepares to function as the opposition for the first time after remaining in power for several years. Senior leaders within the party are discussing the need for a leader capable of strongly challenging the BJP government inside the Assembly while simultaneously maintaining organisational discipline amid rising internal dissatisfaction.

According to sources, unease within the organisation has increased following the election results. Several former MLAs, senior leaders and party spokespersons have publicly questioned the party’s strategy and leadership decisions. The recent issuance of show-cause notices to five spokespersons over alleged anti-party remarks further highlighted the internal tensions within the organisation.

Party sources stated that Mamata Banerjee is personally monitoring the process and holding discussions with senior legislators before the final decision is taken. The official announcement is expected after a legislative party meeting. The leadership is reportedly trying to identify a leader who can effectively perform the role of opposition leader while preventing further divisions inside the organisation.

Firhad Hakim’s name is currently being discussed prominently within party circles due to his organisational experience and political influence in Kolkata. At the same time, Sovandeb Chattopadhyay is also being considered because of his long political experience and perceived ability to maintain balance within the party structure. Discussions are also continuing within sections of the party over whether the leadership should continue with experienced senior leaders or gradually introduce younger faces into key organisational positions.
