A police vehicle transporting two accused from court to Raiganj jail came under attack on Wednesday afternoon in the Panjipara area of Goalpokhar, Uttar Dinajpur. Gunfire targeted the van, injuring two police officers who were on duty. The incident has created tension at the district police headquarters. Local sources reported that the two accused had been produced at the Islampur court earlier in the day for a hearing. Following the court session, they were being transported back to Raiganj jail when the attack occurred.
Eyewitnesses revealed that gunshots were fired at the police van while it was passing through Panjipara. Officers Neelkanth Sarkar and Deven Vaishya sustained injuries and were immediately rushed to Islampur Hospital for treatment. Their current medical condition remains uncertain.
Authorities are yet to determine who was behind the attack or the motive behind the gunfire. There is also no confirmation of whether the two accused escaped during the chaos.
Police officials have launched an investigation into the incident, intensifying efforts to identify the perpetrators. Senior officers have assured that all necessary measures are being taken to maintain law and order in the area.
