First trial run on Sealdah-Esplanade green line stretch completed: 2.63 km in 11 minutes | watch

The first trial run on the 2.63 km Sealdah-Esplanade stretch of the Green Line Metro was successfully completed today. The trial began at 11:20 AM from Sealdah Metro station, and the trial rake (MR 607) reached Esplanade Metro station at 11:31 AM, completing the 2.63 km stretch in 11 minutes. This marks an important step in the expansion of the East-West Metro corridor and is part of efforts to complete the full 16.6 km route.

The trial was attended by Shri P. Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager of Metro Railway and Chairman of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), along with senior officials from both organizations. Shri Reddy was present in the Motorman's Cab during the trial run, closely monitoring the process. This stretch is a vital segment in the larger Green Line Metro project, which aims to provide enhanced transportation options for commuters in Kolkata and surrounding areas.

The trial run was conducted at a controlled speed, as the stretch has not yet been fully operational. Following the trial, a meeting was held at Esplanade Metro station to review the results of the test and plan the next steps toward making the stretch operational. The officials discussed the operationalization timeline, which is expected to happen soon, pending further tests and safety checks.

The Sealdah-Esplanade stretch is a crucial component of the East-West Metro corridor. The full corridor, when completed, will connect Howrah Maidan on the western side to Salt Lake Sector V on the eastern side, covering 16.6 kilometers. The East-West Metro corridor will provide vital connectivity between major parts of Kolkata, including important business and residential areas. Currently, two separate sections of the East-West Metro are operational: one from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade (4.8 km) and another from Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V (9.0 km).

The Sealdah-Esplanade stretch has faced construction challenges, particularly around Boubazar Metro station, but these issues have been resolved. The entire East-West Metro project is also seeing upgrades to its signaling system, with a French company contracted to improve operational efficiency and safety. These advancements are expected to enhance the overall performance and reliability of the Metro system as it nears full operation.
