Tragedy struck Guangzhou, a bustling city in southern China, as a tornado tore through the region, claiming the lives of five individuals and leaving 33 others injured. Chinese government media reported the devastating impact of the tornado, which reached level-3 intensity in Guangzhou, a metropolis with a population of 19 million.
The tornado's wrath was particularly felt in Liangtian village, located in Baiyun district, where a maximum wind gust of 20.6 meters per second was recorded. As rescue efforts concluded by 10 pm local time, authorities grappled with the aftermath of not only the tornado but also the widespread flooding that has besieged Southern China in recent weeks, endangering the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Guangdong province, with its 127 million residents, has been especially hard hit, with over 110,000 individuals displaced due to flooding. Additionally, recent reports indicate that at least four other fatalities occurred in Guangdong earlier in the week due to flooding.
