Flash floods in Uttarkashi kill 4, leave 50 missing; PM Modi takes stock

A devastating cloudburst in the catchment area of the Kheer Ganga river has triggered massive flash floods and landslides in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district, resulting in the death of at least four people and leaving over 50 feared missing. The disaster, which struck the high-altitude Dharali village, has caused widespread destruction, with terrifying visuals emerging of a strong torrent of water and debris sweeping away houses and infrastructure.

The incident prompted a rapid response from state and central authorities. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah have spoken with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to review the situation and assured him of full central assistance. In response, three teams of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and four teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been rushed to the site to assist the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), the Indian Army, and the district administration in rescue and relief operations.

Continuous heavy rainfall and blocked roads are hindering rescue efforts, making it difficult to reach all the affected areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a "red" alert for extremely heavy rainfall in the region, with a "yellow" alert in place for the rest of the week, raising concerns about further damage. Authorities have issued urgent advisories, urging people to maintain a safe distance from rivers and streams as the situation remains highly volatile.
