Former Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud on Saturday hailed the Constitution as the vital force providing stability to the nation and binding together India's diverse communities, religions, and cultures. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the launch of Congress leader Shashi Tharoor's new book, 'Our Living Constitution,' the former CJI said the Constitution has "moulded India into one nation" over the past 75 years, enduring challenges from various cycles of governance and global events.
In response to concerns raised by the Opposition regarding threats to the Constitution and constitutional bodies, Chandrachud asserted, "The Constitution is here for all times." He emphasized that the document's enduring value lies in its ability to unite the country and carve out a better future for every citizen. He also highlighted the importance of such public conversations for the younger generation, whom he referred to as "the hope and future of our society."
The former CJI also reflected on the desirability of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), stating that it is an ambition expressed by the Constitution itself. He stressed that while it is important to "realise this ambition and goal," it must be done by "tak[ing] all segments of our society and community into confidence." He added that this approach is essential for creating a truly just Indian society.
