Former West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at SSKM Hospital after his health significantly worsened on Thursday, January 23. Chatterjee, who has been dealing with various health complications, experienced severe issues related to his lungs and kidneys. Doctors noted abnormal levels of sodium, potassium, and creatinine, indicating a serious deterioration in his condition. Due to these critical health concerns, he was moved to the ICU for urgent care. As of now, hospital authorities have not issued any official medical bulletin regarding his condition or treatment.
Chatterjee has been in custody for nearly three years in connection with the state's recruitment corruption case. He was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July 2022, and subsequently, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) also took him into custody. During his time in detention, Chatterjee’s multiple bail requests were consistently denied, with the exception of a recent conditional bail granted by the court. Despite the court's decision, Chatterjee remains in custody as he has not been granted bail in the ongoing CBI case.
In addition to his legal troubles, Partha Chatterjee’s health has been a matter of concern. He has suffered from several pre-existing health issues, including hypertension and other chronic conditions, which have worsened during his time in jail. Sources indicate that Chatterjee recently suffered a panic attack within the correctional facility, further complicating his condition. On Monday, January 20, he reported feeling unwell, prompting doctors to conduct a series of medical tests. Based on these results, he was admitted to SSKM Hospital for further evaluation. His condition continued to deteriorate, leading to his transfer to the ICU.
Chatterjee had been regularly monitored for his health at the Presidency Correctional Home, where monthly check-ups were conducted by medical professionals. These assessments revealed the gradual worsening of his health, prompting the decision for his hospitalization. The prison authorities ensured that necessary steps were taken to address his health concerns, but given the worsening state, his transfer to SSKM Hospital became inevitable.
At SSKM Hospital, Chatterjee's condition is being monitored by a dedicated medical team. While no detailed updates on his treatment have been provided, it is understood that his condition is being managed with specialized care. His health status will continue to be assessed, and treatment will be adjusted as necessary. Hospital authorities have refrained from disclosing further specifics regarding his prognosis or recovery process.
