BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the foundation stone for a grand Ram temple will be laid in Nandigram on April 6, coinciding with Ram Navami. The temple, inspired by the Ayodhya Ram Mandir, will be built on 1.5 acres of land and is expected to be the largest Ram temple in West Bengal. Adhikari stated, "The temple will be a symbol of devotion for Bengal’s Hindus and will follow the architectural style of Ayodhya’s Ram temple."
Adhikari also declared that over 20,000 Ram Navami processions would take place across the state, with an estimated participation of one crore people. He urged Hindus to step out with saffron flags and chant "Jai Shri Ram" on the streets. "Hindus have decided to come out and celebrate. Every vehicle will carry saffron flags, and every devotee will join the processions," he said. He also warned the police against preventing the celebrations, stating that they would be held accountable for any restrictions.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for peaceful Ram Navami celebrations, urging all communities to maintain harmony. "Ram Navami is approaching, and Eid has just concluded. I want Ram Navami to be celebrated peacefully," she said. She questioned the BJP’s approach, stating, "Are they trying to incite riots? We will follow Vivekananda and the Vedas, not the jumla party." She also appealed to Left parties and the BJP to come together to maintain peace.
The political debate over religious celebrations has intensified ahead of next year’s state elections. Adhikari alleged that the TMC government had failed to protect Hindu festivals in the past, citing incidents during previous Ram Navami and Durga Puja celebrations. He claimed, "Last year, TMC-backed elements attacked Ram Navami processions. Similar attacks on Hindu religious sites happened during Durga Puja." He also alleged that "jihadist elements," with the support of some TMC leaders, were responsible for such incidents.
With the foundation stone laying scheduled in Nandigram and large-scale celebrations planned, security has been heightened in various districts. Law enforcement agencies are preparing for the processions, which are expected to draw large crowds. The West Bengal government has assured that all necessary measures will be taken to maintain law and order during the festivities.
