Gang loots jewellery shop on gunpoint in broad daylight, escapes with valuables worth lakhs

In a brazen daylight robbery on September 3, 2025, six armed criminals stormed Vardhman Jewellers in Jamshedpur’s Sonari area, Jharkhand, escaping with gold and diamond ornaments worth lakhs of rupees. The audacious heist, which unfolded under the jurisdiction of Sonari police station, left the shop owner, Pankaj Jain, seriously injured after a violent confrontation. The robbers, initially posing as customers, turned hostile, holding Jain at gunpoint and looting the store in a matter of minutes. The incident has sent shockwaves through the bustling city, raising urgent concerns about rising crime and public safety.

According to eyewitnesses, the six men entered the shop appearing as ordinary customers, casually browsing the displays. Moments later, they pulled out firearms, ordering staff and customers to stay silent. Pankaj Jain, attempting to protect his livelihood, resisted the robbers, only to be struck on the head with the butt of a pistol. Bleeding profusely, he collapsed as the gang ransacked the showcases and storage areas, stuffing bags with high-value gold and diamond jewellery.

The robbers fled before police could respond, leaving behind a scene of chaos and a critically injured Jain.Pankaj Jain was rushed to Tata Main Hospital (TMH), where doctors described his condition as stable but critical due to a severe head injury. His family, gathered at the hospital, expressed anguish over the attack, noting that Jain had run the family-owned business for over a decade. Local shopkeepers and residents, shaken by the incident, described the Sonari market as a busy commercial hub where such a bold crime was unthinkable. Many are now questioning the adequacy of police patrols in the area, especially during peak business hours.

The Jamshedpur police have launched a manhunt, forming multiple teams to track the culprits. Early investigations suggest the robbers were well-prepared, possibly conducting prior reconnaissance of the shop. CCTV footage from Vardhman Jewellers and nearby establishments is being analyzed to identify the suspects, who reportedly fled in a stolen white SUV. A case has been registered under sections for armed robbery, assault, and attempt to murder, with police suspecting the involvement of an interstate gang known for targeting jewellery stores in eastern India.

The incident has sparked outrage among local traders, who are demanding increased security and stricter measures against organized crime. The Jamshedpur Chamber of Commerce has called for an emergency meeting with police officials to discuss safety protocols, emphasizing that such attacks threaten the city’s reputation as a commercial hub.As the investigation continues, the community remains on edge, with shop owners in Sonari and nearby markets enhancing their own security measures. For Pankaj Jain’s family, the focus is on his recovery, but the trauma of the violent robbery lingers. The incident underscores the growing challenge of tackling organized crime in urban centers like Jamshedpur, where criminals are becoming increasingly bold. Authorities have promised swift action, but for now, residents and traders are left grappling with fear and uncertainty.
