The construction of the Gangasagar Bridge connecting Kakdwip to Gangasagar has moved a step forward, with the West Bengal government distributing compensation cheques to landowners affected by the project. On Friday, 39 residents of Sagar received cheques for their acquired land at the Sagar Block Community Development Office. The cheques were handed over in the presence of Sundarban Development Minister and Sagar MLA Bankim Chandra Hazra and Block Development Officer Kanaiya Kumar Rao.
The bridge project includes the construction of a linking road, for which the Public Works Department has already completed site inspections. This road will affect 139 residents in Kakdwip and 39 in Gangasagar, impacting both land and residential properties. The state government had already initiated the land acquisition process, and compensation is being provided alongside acquisition. The affected properties include both housing and agricultural land.
Sundarban Development Minister Bankim Chandra Hazra stated that the government has handed over compensation cheques to all landowners whose land has been acquired for the Gangasagar Bridge project. According to officials, the initial groundwork for the project is nearly complete, including acquisition and inspection, and the next step is to begin physical construction.
