West Indies cricket legend Gary Sobers passes away; was first to smash 6 sixes in 6 balls
Debate over India’s Test coaching setup has intensified following back-to-back home series whitewashes, with former England cricketer Monty Panesar offering pointed advice to head coach Gautam Gambhir. Panesar suggested that Gambhir should consider coaching a Ranji Trophy side to better understand the demands of red-ball cricket.
While acknowledging Gambhir’s success in white-ball formats, including recent international tournament wins, Panesar questioned his effectiveness in Test cricket. He said coaching in domestic red-ball competitions and interacting closely with experienced Ranji coaches could help Gambhir grasp the nuances of building and sustaining a strong Test team.
The remarks come amid reports suggesting that the Indian cricket board had sounded out VVS Laxman for the role of Test coach following India’s recent defeats. However, these reports were officially denied, with board officials stating that no change in the current leadership group is under consideration.
Panesar also pointed to a transitional phase in Indian Test cricket, stressing that the retirement of senior players has weakened the side. He added that rebuilding a competitive Test team will take time and careful planning at both domestic and international levels.
