Gold smuggler nabbed from Indo-Bangladesh border, 2 biscuits recovered

A Bangladeshi man, Kamunul Hossain, was arrested by the Border Security Force (BSF) for attempting to smuggle gold into India at the India-Bangladesh border in Murshidabad, West Bengal. The incident occurred at Charbhadra 3 No. Border Out Post (BOP), under the jurisdiction of Jalangi police station, as part of a targeted operation by the BSF. The 146th Battalion of BSF, while on a routine patrol, received intelligence about a possible smuggling attempt involving gold being transported across the border from Bangladesh into India.

On noticing a suspicious individual driving a tractor in the area, BSF officers intercepted him. A search of Kamunul Hossain’s person initially yielded two gold biscuits. However, further questioning led officers to expand their search to the surrounding area, where they discovered that the suspect had buried additional gold in the ground. The BSF team found the gold in four separate portions, concealed underground. The total amount of gold recovered has not been officially disclosed, but authorities confirmed the discovery was significant. The exact weight and market value of the gold are under review.

Kamunul Hossain, a resident of the Jalangi block in Murshidabad, was immediately arrested and taken into custody by the BSF. The tractor he had been operating was seized for further investigation. According to BSF sources, Hossain was attempting to smuggle the gold from Bangladesh into India, likely for distribution in local markets. Gold smuggling has been a persistent issue along the India-Bangladesh border due to the high demand for gold in India and the porous nature of the border, which makes it easier for smugglers to bypass regular checks.

Following the arrest, the BSF handed over Kamunul Hossain to customs authorities for further processing and legal action. The customs department is now investigating whether Hossain was part of a larger smuggling network operating along the border. The authorities are also looking into the methods used to smuggle the gold, such as whether the gold was meant to be transported in bulk or in smaller portions for easier concealment.
