A goods train en route from Howrah to Kharagpur experienced a derailment near Mecheda, leading to disruptions in the movement of trains along the Howrah-Kharagpur route. According to sources from the South Eastern Railway, the incident resulted in the cancellation of several up and down Howrah-bound trains on Saturday. The derailment occurred when the third compartment of the goods train unexpectedly opened near Nandigajan station close to Mecheda while the train was traveling at a significant speed.
The derailment caused the goods train to roll for an extended distance, damaging the railway line. Immediate action was taken by railway authorities to clear the damaged wagon and coach, and repair work on the line commenced promptly. Six up and eight down local trains on the Howrah-Kharagpur branch had to be canceled initially, but train services have now been normalized.
