By-polls announced on 6 Assembly & 1 Lok Sabha seat of Bengal on Nov 13
The Indian government has announced a "special session of Parliament" scheduled to take place from September 18 to 22. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi conveyed this information via X (formerly Twitter). The session will consist of five sittings and will provide a platform for discussions and debates during the Amrit Kaal period. However, government sources have remained tight-lipped regarding the specific agenda for this session. There are indications that it may not be a joint session of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, and it may not be held in the new Parliament building.
Amid these developments, government sources have hinted at potential topics for discussion. The agenda might include commemorating Amrit Kaal celebrations and discussions about India's status as a 'developed nation'. Nevertheless, there is no indication of any significant bills that will be presented or passed during the special session.
The timing of this parliamentary session is noteworthy as it coincides with the third meeting of the opposition alliance, I.N.D.I.A., in Mumbai. This 28-party coalition aims to challenge the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the upcoming general election.
The special session will also unfold amidst significant national developments, such as the recently hosted G20 Summit in Delhi, which took place between September 8 and 10. Furthermore, the session will follow the disclosure made to the Supreme Court that the government is open to holding elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta affirmed that the decision on the timing of elections in the region lies with central and state election bodies.
