Governor Ananda Bose sends report to Home Ministry over Murshidabad violence

The tense situation in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, triggered by protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, has prompted swift action from both the state and central governments. West Bengal Governor C. V. Ananda Bose has sent a detailed communique to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), outlining the unfolding developments and law and order status in the district.

According to sources in Raj Bhavan, the communique comprises ground-level insights gathered by the Governor’s core team, supplemented by inputs from the state secretariat. It also reportedly contains confidential exchanges between Governor Bose and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee regarding the deteriorating conditions in Murshidabad.

The situation began to spiral over the last few days, with protests intensifying in specific areas of the district. In response, the state government has transferred 23 police officers with proven expertise in managing communal and law-and-order disturbances to Murshidabad. This specialized team will remain stationed there until normalcy is restored.

West Bengal’s Director General of Police Rajeev Kumar has already reached the district to oversee operations and coordinate efforts with the district administration and the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF). CAPF personnel have been actively conducting route marches in the violence-hit pockets since Sunday morning.

On the central front, Inspector General (South Bengal Frontier) of the Border Security Force, K. S. Shekhawat, also arrived in Murshidabad on Sunday to assess and aid the ground operations. Special CAPF deployments have been concentrated in nine hyper-sensitive areas under the orders of a special division bench of the Calcutta High Court issued Saturday evening.

As of Sunday afternoon, the total number of arrests linked to the violence stands at 150. The death toll has climbed to four, further heightening concerns over law and order. Efforts from both state and central agencies are ongoing to restore peace in the region.
