Bhaskar Gupta has been removed from the post of interim Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, as announced by West Bengal Governor and Chancellor C. V. Anand Bose on Friday. The decision comes at a time when the university has been facing unrest, and the sudden removal has left Jadavpur University without a Vice-Chancellor.
Gupta had fallen ill and was admitted to the hospital following recent tensions at the university. However, his removal has raised questions, as he stated that he has not yet received any official letter regarding his dismissal. Meanwhile, the university registrar has confirmed receiving an official communication from Raj Bhavan, stating that the removal order is effective from March 27.
With this decision, Jadavpur University is now functioning without a Vice-Chancellor, and no announcement has been made regarding a replacement. The absence of a VC during this critical period of student unrest and administrative turmoil has sparked concerns over the university's governance.
The unrest at Jadavpur University escalated earlier this month when West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu faced protests while attending a meeting on campus. The situation turned chaotic, leading to the minister falling ill due to the agitation. Additionally, a Jadavpur student was injured after being hit by the minister’s car, further intensifying tensions on campus.
