Govt denies lockdown speculation, calls rumours “irresponsible and harmful”

Hardeep Singh Puri on Friday categorically dismissed rumours of a nationwide lockdown, stating that no such proposal is under consideration by the Government of India. The clarification comes amid growing speculation linked to global supply disruptions and recent geopolitical tensions, with the minister urging citizens to remain calm and avoid panic.

In a statement, Puri emphasised that the government is closely monitoring global developments related to energy, supply chains, and essential commodities in real time. He assured that all necessary steps are being taken under the leadership of Narendra Modi to ensure uninterrupted availability of fuel, energy, and other critical supplies for citizens across the country.

Addressing concerns triggered by online speculation, Puri stated that rumours of a lockdown are “completely false” and warned that spreading such misinformation is irresponsible and harmful. He reiterated that India remains prepared to handle emerging challenges through coordinated and proactive measures, highlighting the country’s resilience during previous global crises.

The confusion appears to have arisen following references to preparedness in recent government statements, which were linked to ongoing global uncertainties rather than any plan to impose restrictions. Authorities clarified that these remarks were focused on administrative readiness and contingency planning, not on limiting public movement or economic activity.

Officials also stressed that there are no plans to reintroduce measures similar to the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. The government continues to focus on maintaining stability in essential supplies while ensuring that economic activities and daily life remain unaffected, urging people to rely only on verified information.
