After previous incidents at the airport and Kalighat, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar faced another protest, this time at Dakshineswar. Hundreds of people gathered outside the famous temple from early morning, holding black flags and chanting “Go Back” slogans. Observers questioned how such a large crowd assembled despite a strong police presence in the area.
Protesters stated they were demonstrating against alleged harassment of ordinary citizens and the deaths of several people, with some chanting, “200 people have died; Mother Mangala will never forgive this.” The demonstrations reflected growing public tension amid ongoing election-related controversies in West Bengal.
Earlier on Monday, Gyanesh Kumar had visited Kalighat for prayers and, on Tuesday morning, toured Belur Math before a scheduled press conference. During his 45-minute visit, he inspected the premises, spoke with the Mahants, and emphasized, “West Bengal is the sacred land of Thakur Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. The Election Commission is determined to conduct a violence-free legislative assembly election here.”
