A case has been filed in the Calcutta High Court challenging the notification issued by Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma, which restricts public gatherings in certain areas of Kolkata and South 24 Parganas. The High Court allowed the case to be filed on Thursday, and a hearing is expected next Friday.
The Commissioner’s notification, effective from September 25 to November 23, prohibits the gathering of more than five people in specific areas, including Bowbazar, Dharmatala, and Hare Street.
This has raised concerns, especially with the upcoming Durga Puja celebrations, when large crowds are expected for pandal parikrama. The petitioners argue that such restrictions may cause significant problems for people who traditionally gather in Kolkata for the festival.
On Wednesday, Commissioner Manoj Verma held a meeting with several Durga Puja committees. While organizers expressed concerns about potential chaos due to the restrictions, the Commissioner assured that the police would maintain surveillance to ensure a peaceful celebration.
