The Calcutta High Court on Friday transferred the investigation into the vandalism at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The vandalism occurred on the night of August 14 during a midnight protest against the rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor.
The court expressed severe criticism of the Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government, describing the incident as an "absolute failure of state machinery." A bench led by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam questioned the effectiveness of the state police, highlighting their inability to protect the hospital and its staff.
“We will close down the hospital. We will shift everyone. Close the hospital. How many patients are there?” the court remarked, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The bench questioned how doctors could work fearlessly when the police themselves were unable to safeguard the premises.
The high court took up the case after receiving multiple emails concerning the vandalism and mob attack at the hospital. The state government, while defending its actions, mentioned that a mob of approximately 7,000 people had gathered unexpectedly, leading to a chaotic situation. Despite the firing of tear gas and the injury of 15 police personnel, including a Deputy Commissioner, the court was unimpressed with the state's handling of the situation.
The court also pointed out the significant impact such incidents have on doctors and medical staff, stressing the need for a thorough and impartial investigation.
