'Jo Ram Ko Laye Hain' singer Kanhaiya Mittal to join Congress
In the aftermath of the rape and murder of a female doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College, questions have been raised regarding the role of the Kolkata Police. A lawyer has demanded the resignation of Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal, alleging that he made public the name of the deceased doctor. The demand was raised in the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday.
During the hearing before the division bench of Chief Justice T.S. Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya, lawyer Amrita Pandey called for Goyal's resignation. However, the Chief Justice declined to consider the matter at this time, noting that the issue is pending before the Supreme Court. He suggested that the petitioner present her case in the apex court, as the Central Government is also expected to file a petition related to the incident.
The case has sparked significant controversy, particularly concerning the role of the Kolkata Police during the attack and vandalism at R.G. Kar Medical College on August 14. The court had previously expressed dissatisfaction with the police's handling of the situation.
On Monday, junior doctors marched towards Lalbazar, demanding Commissioner Goyal's resignation. The march began at College Square and was halted by police barricades at Phears Lane. The doctors staged a 22-hour sit-in protest before being allowed to proceed further. A delegation of 22 doctors eventually met with the Police Commissioner to submit a memorandum demanding his resignation. Despite the meeting, the junior doctors expressed dissatisfaction with Goyal's response and stated that their movement would continue.
