Heavy snowfall covered the higher reaches along the Indo-China border on Friday, including the Nathula Pass, Kupup, and Tsomgo Lake areas, plunging temperatures in Sikkim to sub-zero levels. The severe weather has disrupted movement across mountain routes, affecting both locals and tourists.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy to very heavy snowfall was recorded since early morning, prompting a red alert for the state. Authorities have warned of continued intense weather over the next 24 hours and urged people to avoid travel to higher altitudes.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is engaged in clearing snow from critical routes to restore essential connectivity, while the state administration has placed disaster response teams on standby. Tourists have been advised to postpone visits as roads remain slippery and visibility is low.
Officials said the temperature in the Nathula region could drop further overnight, marking one of the earliest and heaviest snowfalls of the season. Residents have been asked to take precautions as the cold wave intensifies across Sikkim’s upper regions.
