The 2025 Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has officially begun, drawing millions of devotees and tourists for its 45-day duration. This grand event, under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, is set to offer a wide range of attractions, from aerial helicopter rides to various cultural and adventure activities. A key highlight is the helicopter ride, which offers visitors a unique aerial view of the Mahakumbh area, including the Sangam and the vast Mela grounds. The ride lasts between seven to eight minutes and is priced at Rs 1,296 per person, significantly lower than the earlier fare of Rs 3,000. Bookings for these rides can be made through the official website of Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (UPSTDC), with operations managed by Pawan Hans, a Government of India enterprise.
In addition to the helicopter rides, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Department has organized several exciting events during the Mela. From January 24 to 26, a spectacular drone show, water laser show, and other adventure activities will take place, adding a modern touch to the traditionally spiritual event. These shows will be held in designated locations within the Mahakumbh grounds. Additionally, the department has set up facilities for water sports and adventure activities, offering a mix of excitement and spirituality for attendees. Helicopter rides, shows, and adventure activities are expected to attract both religious and thrill-seeking visitors.
Cultural performances will be a prominent feature of the Mela. The Ganga Pandal, located near the Sangam, will host a series of performances, beginning with Bollywood singer Shankar Mahadevan’s inaugural performance on January 16. Other performances will include Mohit Chauhan’s closing performance on February 24, 2025. These performances are part of a broader cultural program celebrating Uttar Pradesh's rich heritage. Special events related to Uttar Pradesh Day (UP Diwas) will also be held, showcasing the state's art, music, and culture. Throughout the Mela, renowned artists from various musical genres will perform at multiple stages set up in Prayagraj.
The Mahakumbh Mela is centered around the sacred Shahi Snan (royal baths), which take place on three key dates: Makar Sankranti (January 14), Mauni Amavasya (January 29), and Basant Panchami (February 3). These dates are the most auspicious for devotees, who gather to take a holy dip in the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The Mela is considered one of the largest spiritual gatherings in the world, with millions of devotees attending each edition, which takes place every 12 years in Prayagraj.
In light of the expected massive crowds, certain temples, including the Lete Hanuman Temple, located near the Sangam, have made arrangements to manage access. The temple will remain closed for darshan on Makar Sankranti, Mauni Amavasya, and Basant Panchami, as these dates attract the highest number of devotees. However, visitors will still be able to view the temple's peak from a distance. Rituals will continue inside the temple, and prayers will be offered for the well-being and auspicious journeys of all devotees. The closure on these days is intended to ease crowd congestion while ensuring the temple remains part of the Mela’s spiritual offerings.
