Calcutta High Court has intervened in the West Bengal government's aggressive crackdown on illegal structures, specifically halting the demolition process in the Tiljala area. During a hearing on Friday, Justice Shampa Dutta Pal ordered that the status quo be maintained regarding all contested constructions in the locality.
Following a recent fire incident in Tiljala, the Chief Minister had issued stern directives to disconnect electricity and water lines for scattered illegal buildings across Kolkata. While several structures were demolished using heavy machinery, the matter escalated to the High Court as affected residents challenged the lack of due process and the suddenness of the state's actions.
Justice Pal has mandated that the statements of the plaintiffs must be formally heard within the next 30 days. Furthermore, the case has been moved to a regular bench for its next hearing to determine the long-term validity of these constructions. For now, the machinery has been silenced, and the residents of Tiljala have a one-month window to present their legal arguments against the Suvendu government’s demolition orders.
