Hills overload as thousands of cars rush to Shimla, Manali, Sikkim & Mussoorie amid heatwave

As a relentless heatwave sweeps across northern, central, and southern India in 2026, popular hill stations are witnessing an unprecedented surge in tourism, pushing local infrastructure to its breaking point. Iconic destinations such as Manali, Shimla, Mussoorie, and Kodaikanal are currently grappling with massive traffic gridlocks. Roads and parking lots designed for limited capacity are now overflowing with thousands of vehicles, leaving travelers stranded for hours on major highways and town arteries as they seek respite from the soaring temperatures in the plains.

In Himachal Pradesh, the situation in Manali has reached a critical stage, exacerbated by tourists flocking to see snow near Rohtang Pass. Despite a digital permit system limiting access to 1,200 vehicles daily, thousands of additional cars are flooding the town. Similarly, Shimla is seeing over 25,000 vehicles enter daily against a parking capacity of just 20,000, causing severe congestion at key junctions like Victory Tunnel and Sanjauli. The improved connectivity via the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway has also brought a weekend "explosion" of tourists to Mussoorie, leaving the Mall Road virtually paralyzed.

The spiritual tourism sector is adding further strain, with the 2026 Char Dham Yatra recording over 1.5 million pilgrims in its first month alone. Kedar Nath, in particular, has seen a staggering 4.5 million devotees in less than three weeks, overwhelming the mountain roads of Uttarakhand. Down south, the narrow ghat roads of Kodaikanal are unable to handle the sudden spike in vehicular movement, while in the north-east, Sikkim's Yumthang Valley is facing severe bottlenecks as tourists divert from landslide-hit routes to alternative, high-altitude roads.

Authorities across these states are struggling to manage the daily inflow, deploying extra police forces to regulate traffic that remains at a standstill for hours. With parking spaces filling up in the early morning hours, enforcement agencies are finding it nearly impossible to control the chaos. The current crisis highlights the growing gap between the increasing demand for mountain getaways and the structural limitations of India’s hill town infrastructure during extreme weather events.
