A Hindu businessman was stabbed to death in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh district late Monday night, just days before the country goes to the polls to elect its Prime Minister. The killing has raised fresh concerns over law and order ahead of the national elections.
The victim was identified as 62-year-old Susen Chandra Sarkar, a rice trader and resident of Dakshinkanda village. Sarkar owned a shop named “Bhai Bhai Enterprise” at the Bogar Bazar intersection in Trishal, where the attack took place around 11 pm.
According to police, unidentified assailants entered Sarkar’s shop and attacked him with a sharp weapon. After killing him, they allegedly pulled down the shutters from outside and fled the scene. Family members later found him lying in a pool of blood while searching for him.
Sarkar was rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. Police said the body has been kept for postmortem examination and legal proceedings have been initiated. Officers also visited the spot soon after the incident to assess the situation.
The victim’s son, Sujan Sarkar, said that cash was stolen from the shop after the murder and claimed there was no known enmity with anyone. He demanded swift identification and punishment of those responsible for killing his father.
