Historic lung transplant saves 16-Year-old's life at Kolkata hospital

The Medica Superspeciality Hospital in Kolkata, West Bengal, achieved a significant milestone by successfully performing a lung transplant on a 16-year-old boy. Led by senior doctors Dr. Kunal Sarkar and Dipanjan Chatterjee, the cardiac surgery department carried out the complex procedure.

The patient, Swapnil Vishwas, hailing from Barasat, was admitted to the hospital on April 27 after accidentally consuming insecticide, resulting in a complete lung collapse. Despite extensive treatments and interventions, his condition did not improve. Fortunately, the hospital received information about a 41-year-old brain-dead patient, Prasanjit Mahanti, in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, who had willingly donated his lungs.

The medical team at Medica Superspeciality Hospital swiftly coordinated with Mahanti's family and successfully transported his lungs to Kolkata. The lung transplant procedure was promptly initiated, ultimately giving Swapnil a new lease on life. Dr. Dipanjan expressed satisfaction with Swapnil's improved condition following the transplant and expressed hope for his future well-being. The medical achievement represents a significant milestone in the field of organ transplantation in the region.
