The Kolkata Metro has successfully completed its long-awaited journey to Howrah via an underground tunnel under the Ganges River

On April 12, 2023, the Kolkata Metro successfully reached Howrah via an underground tunnel under the Ganges River. The event marked the end of a long-awaited dream and set the stage for the upcoming connection between Kolkata and Howrah via the metro rail system.
The Metro's General Manager, P Udayashankar, personally boarded one of the two rakes that arrived at the newly built Howrah Maidan metro station from Kolkata. The first rake reached its destination at 11:52 am, followed by the second one.
Although the Kolkata Metro officials have stated that the two rakes were not part of a trial or experimental run, they assured the public that the trial phase would commence soon. The trial will run for the next seven months as a preparation phase.
The event was hailed as a historic moment by both the Kolkata Metro officials and the Chief Public Relations Officer of Metro Rail, Kaushik Mitra. Mitra acknowledged the numerous obstacles that were overcome to make the Metro's journey to Howrah a reality and expressed gratitude that the Indian Railways would soon provide a special gift to the people of Kolkata and its suburbs.
