A shocking case of domestic violence has emerged from Howrah, where a woman was allegedly assaulted by her husband after protesting against his illicit relationship with her sister-in-law. The attack, captured on CCTV, has sparked outrage and allegations of police inaction.
According to the complaint filed at Malipanchghara police station, Riya Hazra of Baranagar married Shubhajit Hazra of Howrah two years ago. Upon discovering her husband’s illegal relationship with his sister, Riya confronted him. This led to what she described as “unimaginable atrocities” — Shubhajit allegedly threw her to the ground inside the house and beat her mercilessly, while family members watched. The CCTV footage reportedly shows the assault in detail.
Riya also alleged that Shubhajit later came to her parental home in Baranagar and assaulted her father. She claims police have taken no strong action due to her husband’s influence, leaving her and her family in fear and effectively under self-imposed house arrest.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the protection of domestic violence survivors and the accountability of law enforcement in cases involving influential accused.
