The state Assembly on Saturday passed the Howrah Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, bringing a major change to the civic body’s administrative structure. With the passage of the bill, the number of wards in the Howrah Municipal Corporation will increase from 50 to 66, leading to a corresponding rise in the number of councillors.
The government said the decision was taken to address population growth and improve the delivery of civic services. The amendment modifies Section 5 of the Howrah Municipal Corporation Act, 1980, with the aim of aligning the civic framework with present-day administrative needs.
Placing the bill in the House, departmental minister Firhad Hakim said Howrah’s growing population had made it difficult to provide services effectively under the existing structure. He added that increasing the number of wards would strengthen administrative reach at the grassroots level and speed up development work.
