Howrah police arrest two men for extorting money from Manglahat traders
Two men were reportedly arrested red-handed by Howrah Police on Tuesday, while allegedly extorting money from traders in Howrah's Manglahat area. The accused have been identified as Santosh Singh and Mohan Sahoo. Both were taken into custody from the spot after a complaint led to their immediate arrest. Police registered a case under relevant sections for criminal intimidation, threats, and extortion. Local traders had reportedly been facing regular demands for “protection money” through coercion.
According to preliminary investigations, the duo operated through intimidation tactics targeting shopkeepers and businessmen in the busy market area. Sources indicate they may have connections with a former TMC leader and ex-councillor, though police are verifying the full extent of the network. The arrests come amid heightened focus on organised extortion rackets in Howrah. Officers are questioning the duo to uncover possible larger involvement and other victims.
The operation, it seems, was based on specific intelligence and a formal complaint. The accused are being produced before court for further remand. Nonetheless, this incident highlights the challenges of illegal muscle-driven extortion in commercial hubs, even as authorities claim improved law and order. Further probes are underway to determine if the racket extends beyond the two arrested individuals. This comes a few months after the police have launched crackdowns on encroachment around the Howrah Maidan and Mangla Hat areas.
