A tragic and sensational incident has rocked the Dariapur area of Aushgram in East Burdwan, where a man was found hanging shortly after his wife reportedly married her lover in a shocking turn of events. The deceased has been identified as Utpal Karmakar (37), a resident of Dokra Para in the village.
According to local sources, Utpal's wife, Lakshmi Karmakar, had allegedly been in an extramarital relationship with a married man from the same neighborhood. The couple already had two children—a son and a daughter—when tensions in the household began to rise over the affair. Locals say that the matter had become public, triggering unrest in the area.
The situation escalated dramatically when the lover, who already has four daughters and a son of his own, applied vermilion to Lakshmi's forehead—symbolizing marriage in local custom. Soon after, Utpal's lifeless body was discovered hanging inside his home. Sources suggest that Utpal had earlier approached the police for help, but no resolution had been reached before this tragic outcome.
The discovery of Utpal's body sparked widespread outrage in the village. Residents clashed with police officers from the Gushakara outpost who arrived to recover the body. As tensions grew, the police took both Lakshmi and her alleged lover into custody, further aggravating the locals.
During the scuffle between the police and the angry mob, both Lakshmi and her partner sustained injuries. While the police managed to escort the man to the police station, Lakshmi was admitted to the Gushakara Block Primary Health Center for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Utpal’s body has been sent to Burdwan Medical College for postmortem, and police have initiated an investigation into the entire episode. The incident has left the village shaken, raising serious questions about social dynamics and law enforcement response in such emotionally charged cases.
