Husband strangled wife to death, stages fake suicide note in North Kolkata's Baghbazar

In a spine-chilling case where a young housewife was brutally strangled to death by her husband, who then meticulously staged the scene to look like a suicide complete with a forged note. The incident unfolded in North Kolkata's Baghbazar Dispensary Lane under Shyampukur police station area on Saturday evening, as investigators uncovered the grim deception. Puja Purkait, 24, was discovered lifeless with a handwritten note beside her proclaiming, "No one is responsible for our deaths." The unusual phrasing—referencing "our" deaths while her husband Sumit Purkait, 27. was missing—transforming what seemed like a tragic self-inflicted end into a calculated cover-up. As details emerged, it became clear that simmering suspicions of his wife's extra-marital affair had boiled over into violence, prompting Sumit leaving behind a web of lies that cops are now uncovering. 

Married for about a decade to Sumit Purkait, a private sector employee who had recently switched his job from Barrackpore to New Town, settled at a small home in Baghbazar's Dispensary Lane with his wife and their young daughter. Sumit frequently met with his mother-in-law Swapna Debnath and used to talk over call as well. Alarmed by the silence and her daughter non-contactable, Swapna rushed to her daughter's residence, only to be met with horror: Puja lay motionless, the room eerily arranged to mimic a suicide. A suicide note nearby reinforced the facade, but the family's instincts screamed foul play. Rushed to a nearby private hospital nearby in a haze of panic, Puja was pronounced dead on arrival.

As Shyampukur Police Station officers pored over the bizarre suicide note—crafted in Puja's handwriting but laced with inconsistencies—they grilled family members, who voiced growing doubts about its authenticity. Sumit's phone was switched off, added fuel to the fire, hinting at his sudden disappearance. Yesterday's post-mortem report confirmed that Puja had been savagely strangled, her neck bearing the brutal marks of her husband's rage. Digging deeper, police pieced together a motive rooted in marital discord: Sumit had suspicion and rage over an alleged extramarital affair. A fatal confrontation between the couple peaked on Saturday, with Sumit strangled her to death. The accused husband Sumit Purkait surrended before Kolkata Police yesterday. This harrowing tale serves as a stark reminder of how suspicion can fester into tragedy, urging communities to confront and resolve domestic tensions before they erupts violently.
