The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has issued an alert to the West Bengal health department concerning the spread of a lethal variant of adenovirus, particularly affecting children in Kolkata and its neighboring districts. The advisory comes in response to recent findings from the National Institute of Cholera and Enteric Disease (NICED), an ICMR-affiliated institution, which conducted sample testing for adenovirus.
Out of 3,115 individuals tested, 1,257 were found positive for adeno virus, with 40 cases resulting in fatal infections, predominantly among children. The state health department, acknowledging the alert, assures the implementation of necessary precautions to address any potential emergency.
