IED blast damages railway tracks near Kokrajhar, services disrupts across Lower Assam and North Bengal

Tension gripped Lower Assam as unidentified assailants unleashes chaos on the region's lifeline—the railway tracks—with a powerful improvised explosive device (IED) blast  just five kilometers away from Kokrajhar Railway Station. The blast, which ripped through the line heading towards Salakati, shattered around two feet of the railway tracks, hurling fragments across several meters and forcing an immediate shutdown of services that rippled through Lower Assam and into North Bengal. Miraculously, no lives were lost and no trains derailed, but the incident sent shockwaves through commuters and authorities alike, highlighting the persistent security vulnerabilities in this sensitive border area.

Railway officials and security teams swarmed the site, their flashlights to assess the damage. Kokrajhar Police arrived swiftly, confirming the extent of the destruction while assuring the public that repairs were underway. Train operations ground to a halt for long hours stranding passengers on several up and down lines, when meticulous inspections by railway engineers and bomb squads cleared the path for resumption. Assam Police echoed the relief over zero casualties but underscored the gravity of the sabotage attempt in a region already on high alert.

Now, with the tracks hastily restored, the focus has shifted to unmasking the culprits behind this brazen act. Security has been ramped up along the vulnerable stretch, patrols intensified, and a forensic team dispatched to scour for clues amid the twisted metal. Assam Police claims that the investigation is in full swing and they will leave no stone unturned to bring those responsible to justice, As probe teams deepens in a bid to prevent future threats. For locals and beyond, this episode serves as a stark reminder of the fragile peace in Northeast India, where infrastructure attacks continue to test the resolve of law enforcement.
