A fresh case of student death has been reported from the campus of Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where the blood-stained body of a third-year student was recovered from beneath the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall on Saturday morning. The deceased has been identified as 21-year-old Jayveer Singh Daria from Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
According to officials, the student was pursuing Manufacturing Engineering at the institute and was scheduled to appear for his semester examinations on the same day. His body was found before the exams began, prompting immediate notification to the police and campus authorities.
Preliminary inputs suggest that the student may have died by suicide after allegedly jumping from the 8th floor of the hostel building. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including possible academic pressure, while also examining the timeline of his last communication with family members on Friday.
This incident has triggered widespread concern as it is reported to be the 8th death of a research or higher-degree student at IIT Kharagpur in the last 16 months. The repeated nature of such incidents has raised questions in academic and student circles about mental health support, campus surveillance, and institutional safety measures at the premier institute.
