IIT Kharagpur student found dead in hostel, second such incident in 10 days

A fresh case of student death has been reported from IIT Kharagpur, where a 22-year-old M.Tech student was found hanging inside his hostel room at Madan Mohan Malviya Hall on Tuesday. The incident has raised concern as it marks the second such death on campus within a span of 10 days.

The deceased has been identified as Soham Halder, a resident of Barasat in North 24 Parganas, who was pursuing M.Tech in Electronics and Electrical Communication Engineering. According to preliminary information, hostel security personnel were alerted after his room remained locked for an extended period. Upon forced entry, he was found hanging, following which authorities informed the police.

The student was immediately taken to B.C. Roy Hospital on the campus, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police have initiated a probe and the body has been sent for post-mortem examination. Initial findings suggest the case may be a suicide, though the exact circumstances are under investigation, and the family has been informed.

This incident comes close on the heels of another student death reported on April 18, when a third-year Mechanical Engineering student allegedly died after falling from a hostel building. With multiple such cases reported in recent months, concerns have been raised over student mental health and campus well-being, while investigations into the latest case continue.
