Illegal transportation of chicken waste in drums on train jumpers has been reported on the Sealdah-Hasnabad section. The jumpers, which are vital U-shaped electrical cables connecting train coaches, are being misused to carry these drums. These cables are critical for transmitting electricity, signals, and other essential operations between train coaches. Officials have stated that tampering with or overloading these sensitive cables poses significant risks to safety and train operations.
The activity is reportedly prevalent near Madhyamgram and surrounding stations, where the carriers place drums filled with chicken waste on the jumpers before boarding the train. The drums are unloaded at subsequent stations when the train halts. This method is being used to bypass earlier complaints from passengers when similar items were transported in vendor compartments, causing foul odors.
Railway authorities have confirmed that jumpers are designed exclusively for electrical and operational purposes and are not equipped to bear any external load. Misuse of these cables could potentially lead to electrical disruptions or even accidents, according to the Electrical Engineering Department. The practice has raised serious concerns about the safety of train operations and passenger welfare.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has acknowledged the issue and initiated surprise inspections to address the problem. An RPF official stated, “The RPF does not support or allow any such dangerous activities.” The inspections aim to identify and prevent the illegal transportation of goods on train jumpers while ensuring the proper use of railway infrastructure.
Railway officials are evaluating stricter enforcement measures to prevent further violations. They have emphasized that the safety and security of passengers and the integrity of train operations remain a top priority. Efforts are underway to ensure that such practices are completely eliminated from the Sealdah-Hasnabad section.
