No eviction drive in Burrabazar & College Street, clarifies KMC Commissioner
A sustained crackdown against illegal liquor is underway in Jagatballavpur, with joint and separate operations by the Excise Department and police leading to arrests and major seizures. Authorities intensified surveillance following inputs about liquor smuggling activities in the area.
On Monday afternoon, excise officials intercepted a suspected smuggler’s car in Pantihal, Jagatballavpur, and recovered illicit liquor worth around Rs. 6 lakh. Several sacks containing liquor bottles of different sizes were found inside the vehicle. The driver, Sohel Khan, and a passenger, Aftab Ali Khan, both residents of Uluberia, were arrested on the spot.
Later in the evening, Jagatballavpur police carried out raids at multiple locations, including Akbarpur, Begundanga in Pantihal, and Bargachhia. Around 1,000 litres of illegally stored liquor were recovered and destroyed by setting the storage tanks on fire. One person was arrested, and temporary structures used for storing the liquor were demolished, reports said.
