India approves 100% Ethanol fuel amid energy crisis; Gadkari says automakers ready with compatible variant

Amid escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia and mounting pressure on global crude supply chains, India has taken a monumental step toward achieving alternative energy independence. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, officially announced the commercial approval of 100% ethanol fuel (E100) for compatible flex-fuel vehicles. Gadkari revealed that he formally signed the definitive policy file at 8 PM on Saturday night, legally authorizing the distribution and utilization of pure ethanol, effectively clearing all legislative hurdles for a cleaner domestic energy ecosystem.

This major policy breakthrough follows India's highly successful rollout of 20% ethanol-blended petrol (E20), a target achieved well ahead of its original institutional timeline. The central government reported that the E20 blending program drastically reduced the national crude oil import bill, resulting in foreign exchange savings exceeding 1 Lakh Crore. Capitalizing on this massive financial and environmental success, the administration is now shifting gears to establish a comprehensive, self-sustaining 100% ethanol-based transport infrastructure across the sub-continent.

The domestic automotive industry is already moving at an accelerated pace to match the government's aggressive green energy mandates. Major manufacturers like Maruti Suzuki recently debuted a prototype flex-fuel variant of their popular WagonR hatchback, which was jointly unveiled by Minister Gadkari and Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. Simultaneously, two-wheeler giant Hero MotoCorp has displayed its new lineup of ethanol-compliant flex-fuel motorcycles, including modified versions of mass-market staples like the Splendor and HF Deluxe.

According to Minister Gadkari, leading global automakers including Toyota, Suzuki, MG, and Hyundai are slated to launch their production-ready, 100% ethanol-compliant vehicle portfolios within the next 45 to 60 days. To support this massive vehicular transition, the government has already commenced the physical rollout of dedicated ethanol fuel stations. Currently launching across major metropolitan zones, the specialized refueling network is projected to expand rapidly to over 5,000 operational ethanol pumps by 2027, drastically decreasing import dependencies while bolstering local agricultural incomes.
