In a recent interview, Australia's outgoing high commissioner, Barry O'Farrell, highlighted the burgeoning partnership between India and Australia as a significant deterrent to acts of coercion or attempted coercion in the field of defense and security.
The increasing defense engagement between the two countries, both bilaterally and multilaterally, has showcased the effectiveness of their collaboration in deterring coercion across the region. O'Farrell expressed optimism about the progress made in trade relations between India and Australia.
The two nations are aiming to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement by the end of the year, building upon the market access achieved through their initial deal. They are also looking to expand cooperation in areas such as renewable energy, digital trade, and critical minerals, which are essential for India's ambitious plans for electric vehicles.
Australia's pension funds and banks, including Macquarie Bank, are keen on investing in India, particularly in infrastructure projects. O'Farrell mentioned that this interest stems not only from India's impressive growth rate but also from the practical application of Australian funds to support India's development.
With regards to defense engagements, the Mutual Logistics Support Agreement signed in 2020 and Australia's participation in the Malabar naval exercise have significantly strengthened the collaboration between India and Australia. O'Farrell emphasized that trust between the two nations has become a habit, leading to instinctive collaboration. The involvement of military aviators from the US, Britain, and Australia in joint exercises with the Indian Air Force highlights their collective commitment to regional stability and deterring coercion.
When questioned about Australia's engagements with China, O'Farrell emphasized that the Australia-India relationship is not defined by its relations with any other country. Australia is focused on stabilizing its relationship with China, which resorted to economic coercion against Australia during the Covid-19 pandemic. O'Farrell emphasized the importance of stability while acknowledging that disagreements may arise.
Furthermore, O'Farrell addressed concerns regarding the activities of pro-Khalistan elements, stating that they are equally concerning to both the Australian and Indian governments. Australia has implemented laws to protect and secure places of worship, extending their efforts to Hindu temples.
