India beats New Zealand by 4 wickets in 1st ODI; Virat Kohli 93(91)

India secured a hard-fought four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI at Vadodara on Sunday, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. Chasing a formidable target of 301, the home side reached 306 for six in 49 overs, thanks largely to a stellar innings by Virat Kohli. Despite a late flurry of wickets that gave New Zealand a glimmer of hope, India remained composed to cross the finish line with an over to spare.

Virat Kohli was the architect of the chase, scoring a fine 93 that put India in a position of total control. He fell just seven runs short of what would have been his 54th ODI century, departing in the 40th over when India needed 67 more runs with seven wickets in hand. His knock was well-supported by valuable contributions from Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, and a handy cameo by Harshit Rana, ensuring the momentum stayed with the hosts for the majority of the second innings.

Earlier in the day, Daryl Mitchell played a crucial role for the visitors, scoring a gritty 84 off 71 balls. His innings, decorated with five fours and three sixes, helped New Zealand post a competitive total of 300 for eight after a middle-order collapse. Mitchell, currently ranked world No. 3, lived up to his billing by providing the necessary impetus to the Kiwi innings.

The match saw some tense moments towards the end when Kohli, Ravindra Jadeja, and Shreyas Iyer fell in quick succession. Kyle Jamieson’s bowling kept the Kiwis in the hunt, but the target proved just out of reach for the visitors. With this win, India heads into the second match with momentum, looking to seal the series.
